School, Ventris Road. The Special Constabulary were later almost entirely dispensed with as inefficient and Police took over the supervision and clearing of the tunnels themselves.

The first Japanese Mission with demand to surrender was received. Mr. Wright Nooth, Assistant Superinten- dent of Police, L. S. A. 142 Kinloch and L. S.A. 74 Sulli- van were present when the launch arrived at Queen's Pier.

Mount Davis Battery was observed from Green Island opening fire on native craft in the vicinity of Stone Cutters Island, Lai Chi Kok and Cheung Chau. Firing continued for half an hour and a large number of craft were sunk. (These craft remained in or tried to enter a prohibited area in spite of previous warning receiv- ed.)

The house of Mr. Bailey, the Green Island Magazine 's The Custodian, received two direct hits from bonbs. Custodian and his wife and L. S. A. 154 Harris shelter- ing under the stair case received no injuries though the house was wrecked. L. S. A. 154 Harris returned to the depot and station. None of the buildings had received any damage.

Police and the Magazine's Custodian were evacuated on board H. M. S. "Thrasian" and landed at Aberdeen.

22.00 Heavy revolver firing was heard coming from somewhere in Central district. A mobile Police patrol was sent out and carried out a patrol in Central and Western districts but found everything quiet. A big fire in Belchers Street was still burning.

A message was received from the Naval Authorities stating that a Glider was suspected to have landed on Victoria Peak. After notifying local Military Authorities Police from Gough Hill turned out but were fired on twice by the farmer. Finally the Officer in Charge with two soldiers searched the

Inspector Whant, Divisional Inspector, Water Police, L. S. A. 188 Summers, L. S. A. 101 White, L. S. A. 66 Willer- ton and L.S.A.175 ́ Jack with the Shaukiwan Interpre- ter cleared some 200 Junks and sampans from Sai Wan Bay where they were masking the fire of pill boxes. The craft proceeded to an anchorage at the back of Junk Bay. Police party proceeded by land and then used a rowing boat. At the request of G.S.O.I Mr. Calthrop, Senior Superintendent of Police, had previously arranged a day or two before for a party from Shaukiwan to drag the craft on to the mud flats but Col. Newnham reported that this was not sufficient as the craft still floated at high tide. Acting Chief Detective Inspector Baker was found dead in No.3 Conduit Road with gun shot wound in the head in circumstances suggesting suicide. The bombing and shelling of Mount Davis and Bel- chers Fort continued unabated. The general evacua tion of the densely populated area was put into operation but was not very satisfactory due to non-cooperation by the Chinese civilians themsel-

ves.

The district came under constant shell fire.
